Michigan.gov leverages social media technologies to provide real-time citizen-centric customer service, enhance transparency and increase collaboration with its more than 5.8 million followers.

Michigan government has embraced the use of social media since 2011. As an extension to traditional channels of constituent engagement the state uses technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, video live streaming and audio podcasts to create a more accessible and participatory government.

  • Michigan was the  state in the U.S. to officially proclaim June 30 as Social Media Day.
  • Michigan has proclaimed June 30th Michigan Social Media Day eight out of the eleven years it has been a globally recognized event.
  • In 2017, the state of Michigan hosted the first global #SMDayChat Twitter chat in partnership with Mashable #SMDay team. The chat reached more than 764,800 accounts totaling more than 6,385,800 impressions. In 2018, the state hosted the second global #SMDayChat resulting in more than 3,673,702 impressions. In 2019, the state hosted the third global #SMDayChat driving engagement and increasing awareness of the state of Michigan's use of social media.
